This presentation is in conjunction with Marc Haxer’s discussion on dysphasia. The presenters will discuss oral motor techniques and exercises to help students improve swallowing and reduce drooling.
This workshop is designed to provide an overview of possible oral motor exercises for SLP’s, OT’s and teachers.

The future is now! Over the past ten years technology has taken gigantic leaps in education and great strides in helping students with various disabilities. This presentation focuses on the strategies that teachers of POHI students can use to improve the opportunities for learning in the digital age. A look at lesson design along with tools and strategies on how to manage them will be presented. You will be surprised that with a few new strategies many of the things you want to do may not be as difficult as they seem.

This presentation gives concrete techniques to systematically assess and teach pro-social behavior. Students who have severe social deficits can be taught specific, desirable actions for social competence in settings structured for success.

It is repeated in the afternoon.
This “make and take” presentation will teach the craft of making puppet heads from plastic pop bottles thus creating “pop art”. Included will be the art of playing: the spoons and the bones to Irish tunes, the three-string strum stick, the squeeze box, and creating rain sticks from household materials. This promises to be an exciting and fun learning experience for anyone who attends this session!

Sue’s focus uses toys, books and other activities to promote interactive communication and beginning language learning. Low and high tech materials are incorporated along with structuring both the home and school environments to encourage communication. Participants will explore the use of alternative methods of communication and look at some introductory augmentative communication devices.

The SandCastles program provides support to families, siblings, classrooms, and professionals throughout the metro Detroit area. This presentation provides an intimate and in-depth discussion of the three adjustment tasks of grief as well as understanding how professionals can help with the grieving process.

M.O.V.E. - Mobility Opportunities Via Education

Please Note: This session lasts the entire afternoon.
This presentation will provide the rationale, history and background of the M.O.V.E. program to help children of all ages develop physical skills necessary to sit independently, stand, bear weight, and/or take reciprocal walking steps. There will be in-depth instruction on how to use the M.O.V.E. curriculum in school, at home, and in the community using the six steps of M.O.V.E. A video demonstration of how the program could work in the classroom, teaching suggestions, parent ideas to encourage mobility at home, and equipment suggestions will be presented.
